Questions

Questions families ask.

Before you start

My life isn't that interesting.

Almost everyone says that at the start, and very few still think so by the third conversation. Your family is the audience, and they are interested.

Isn't it a little vain?

A Word & Deed book is private. It is printed for your family, ten copies at a time, and it is never offered for sale.

I can't write.

You won't need to write a word. You talk, our writers do the writing, and you approve every page.

Is this a business history?

No. It is the story of your life, in which the business plays a large part and is given the room it deserves. We also write company histories, which are quoted separately.

Can we start with something smaller?

Yes. You can begin with a single story or a Profile, and if you go on to the memoir later, what you have paid comes off its price.

The people and the writing

Who are the interviewers?

Our interviewers come from journalism and broadcasting. They are trained to listen closely, to ask the questions that open a story up and to know when to stay quiet. I match each family with the interviewer best suited to their story.

Will it sound like me?

It should sound so much like you that your family can hear your voice as they read. One writer works on your book from beginning to end, you read every chapter as it is written, and nothing is printed until you are happy with it.

Can you make it read better than I talk?

Yes, that is what a good ghostwriter does. The story and the voice remain yours, simply at their best.

Do you use AI?

We use software to transcribe the recordings. Every word of your book is written by a person.

Why does a memoir take a year?

Memories return with time and the right questions, and the best stories often surface in the later conversations. A year gives your story room to come out properly.

Practicalities

What if my health changes?

Please tell us. We can move to fortnightly conversations, and because chapters are drafted as we go, nothing that has been said is lost.

Who sees it?

Only you, the people you choose to share it with and the small team who make it. Recordings and drafts are kept private, and we delete them whenever you ask.

Can my family be part of it?

Yes. Family members can join a conversation or add memories of their own.

What does it cost, and can we pay over time?

Every project is different, so we agree a fixed price after our first conversation. A Profile suits a smaller budget, and the memoir can be paid in monthly instalments over the year. Brothers and sisters often share the cost.
